Portadown War Memorial, Portadown, Co. Armagh

Portadown War Memorial stands in front of St. Mark's Church of Ireland at the top end of the Co. Armagh town. It commemorates the fallen of several conflicts.

The Portadown War Memorial stands in front of St. Mark's Church of Ireland Church on Church Street at the top end of the Co. Armagh town. Bronze panels mounted on a base of Irish granite commemorate those killed in The Great War and the Second World War. Atop the monument a bronze likeness of an angel places a wreath on the head of a wounded soldier.

The bronze sculpted soldier’s helmet has fallen back, revealing his head. This denotes fortitude, courage, and sacrifice for his country. Both the angel and the soldier stand on a base of sandbags and a gas mask, which represent the battlefield. Behind the memorial, the tower of the nearby St. Mark’s Church of Ireland Church is also dedicated to the fallen of both World Wars.

The Fallen of the Second World War

On 13th November 1925, Lieutenant-General Sir Travers Edwards Clarke G.B.E., K.C.B., K.C.M.C. unveiled the town war memorial in Portadown, Co. Armagh. Some twenty six years later, on 11th November 1951, another public service unveiled memorials to the fallen of the Second World War.

Members of the British legion, the Territorial Army, and other ex-service members led the parade to the memorial at 1035hrs. Those gathered sang a hymn before Dr. George Dougan M.P. unveiled the new plaque. Reverend G.F.H. Byrne, a chaplain with the Royal Air Force dedicated the plaque and read out the names of those commemorated.

On the sounding of The Last Post and Reveille, Mayor Alderman R.J. Magowan laid a wreath on behalf of the borough. The British Legion, Territorial Army, Royal Ulster Constabulary, Royal Navy, Royal Artillery, Royal Irish Fusiliers, Royal Air Force, Army Cadet Force, Women’s Royal Army Corps, and youth organisations also laid wreaths.

2018 additions to the War Memorial

In 2018, to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of The Great War, a number of new names were added to the Portadown War Memorial including 22 who served in the Second World War.
