On 8th September 1945, Chance Vought Corsair JT357 crash-landed at R.A.F. Ballyhalbert, Co. Down. The Canadian pilot served with the Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm 768 Squadron.
On a routine patrol with No. 4 Naval Air Fighter School, the plane suffered from an engine failure. Pilot Lieutenant Frank Wilfred McGarry (O-048970) of the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve force-landed the plane at Ballycran, Co. Down.
The plane came down around 5 miles south-by-south-west of Ballyhalbert Airfield. On landing, the fighter plane collided with a wall and caught fire killing the 25-year-old Canadian pilot.
Lieutenant Frank Wilfred McGarry’s grave is in Grave 48 of Mount St. Joseph Churchyard, Ballycranbeg, Co. Down. He was the son of Edward John McGarry and Agnes McGarry of Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
