British Forces Broadcasting Service: Gibraltarian Camps in Ulster

WartimeNI joined Tony Rodgers in British Forces Broadcasting Service to chat about Gibraltarian camps in Northern Ireland that housed evacuees in wartime.

We joined Co. Antrim based Tony Rodgers on British Forces Broadcasting Service Radio. There, the conversation turned to an often forgotten piece of Northern Ireland's history. In 1944, the British military evacuated Gibraltar and many residents relocated from The Rock to Ulster.

Evacuation camps sprang up across Co. Antrim, Co. Down, and Co. Londonderry. While the Gibraltarians at first struggled to acclimatise, many of them enjoyed their time in Northern Ireland. In fact, with marriages and births on the camps, some even stayed in Ulster to begin their new lives after the war.
