Wartime in Northern Ireland was a matter of life and death for the people of Belfast's Harland and Wolff Shipyard. The need for ships, planes, and armaments put food on the table for many who had been out of work through the hungry 1920s and 1930s. In April 1941, everything changed as the Luftwaffe rained death and destruction on the yards.
We spoke at Eastside Visitor Centre, Belfast, Co. Down on the role of the shipyard at war. From the horrors of the Belfast Blitz, through the building of some of the Royal Navy’s finest vessels and onwards to D-Day on board HMS Belfast.
