The Belfast Spitfire

The Belfast Spitfire P7684 was a Mark IIa version of the iconic Royal Air Force fighter plane. The people of Belfast, Co. Antrim raised funds during 1940.

The Belfast Spitfire had the serial number P7684 DW-S. The Mark IIa Supermarine Spitfire flew with RAF 610 Squadron. On 15th April 1941, it went missing after intercepting Luftwaffe Dornier DO215 off the coast of the Isle of Wight. Pilot Officer Alexander Richard Ross of RAF 610 Squadron died in the crash.

The plane was one of many fighters funded by people of Northern Ireland who contributed to the Belfast Telegraph Spitfire Fund.
