The Londonderry Spitfire

The Londonderry Spitfire P7683 was the first of the Belfast Telegraph Spitfire Fund presentation planes presented to the Royal Air Force from Ulster people.

The Londonderry Spitfire had the serial number P7683. The Mark IIa Supermarine Spitfire flew with RAF 603 Squadron, RAF 111 Squadron, RAF 123 Squadron, RAF 58 Operational Training Unit, RAF 56 Operational Training Unit, and RAF 58 Operational Training Unit. On 19th August 1943 it collided in a formation flight with Spitfire P8387 and crashed near Hammering Mere Farm, Fife, Scotland. Authorities listed the plane as destroyed by fire.

The plane was one of many fighters funded by people of Northern Ireland who contributed to the Belfast Telegraph Spitfire Fund.
