The highlight of the Victory in Europe Day or VE Day celebrations in Lisbellaw, Co. Fermanagh was a parade through the village. After the historic announcement from Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the bells of the local parish church rang out. The village factory whistle also blasted through the well-decorated streets.
Lisbellaw Silver Band, Belle Isle Band, and Derryclavin Pipe Band took part in the parade on 8th May 1945. At the head of the parade, Mr. George Dunlop carried a placard symbolising the Nazi downfall. On the banner, a British Lion stood with one paw on a defeated prone German Eagle.
Residents carried an effigy of Adolf Hitler through the village for trial. Guardsman Albert Orr, a recently returned prisoner of war acted as judge and pronounced a sentence of death and a ceremonial bonfire marked the end of Victory in Europe Day in Lisbellaw, Co. Fermanagh.
