Crowds began to gather on the streets on Crumlin, Co. Antrim on 14th August 1945 even before the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom made the announcement of Victory over Japan.
In the streets, crowds burst into song. As the noise levels grew, others awoke and joined in the celebrations to mark the end of the Second World War in the Pacific.
On V.J. Day, 15th August 1945, a host of flags and bunting flew throughout the town. Residents were in a celebratory mood throughout the day other than on the sports fields. There, Legatiriff beat Crumlin United in the final of the Charity Cup. Mr. F.W. Parks presented the trophy on what was a historic day for reasons other than football.
Throughout the night, bonfires blazed and fireworks erupted in the night sky. Many halls used by the community opened for dancing and locals enjoyed themselves well into the early hours of the morning. The following day was a quieter affair. Many locals headed for the coast while the weather was good before returning that evening for a Victory Dance in the Memorial Hall. As several days of celebration drew to a close, local churches held thanksgiving services on Sunday 19th August 1945.
