On 15th August 1945, local residents of Glenavy, Co. Antrim and the surrounding areas gathered together to celebrate the end of the Second World War in the Pacific. Along the Main Street of the village, they gathered to mark V.J. Day or Victory over Japan Day.
The Main Street of Glenavy, Co. Antrim was full of joyful residents who took part in games and danced well into the early hours of the morning. Mr. Tony McClay provided the music and Mrs. Black of Ballycessy joined him for a few renditions of old-time songs.
Several motorists returning to their homes during the 2-day holiday period that followed the announcement stopped in the village to join in the celebrations. The party drew to a close with the lighting of a large bonfire.
