Historian Ernie Cromie is the Chairman of the Ulster Aviation Society and his 2015 book 'Over Head and Over Here' documents the story of American military aviation in Northern Ireland during the Second World War.
There was a large American military presence in Northern Ireland between the years 1942 and 1945. Over the course of 12 chapters, Cromie discusses the activities at Langford Lodge and other military airfields in Ulster. As well as the United States Army Air Force, the United States Navy, and the Lockheed Overseas Corporation made use of airfields and facilities in Northern Ireland. As well as the military history, ‘Overhead and Over Here’ deals with the socio-economic and cultural impact of the arrival of thousands of Americans and remembers many of the airmen buried in Belfast’s Lisnabreeny American Military Cemetery.
