'The Sinking of the Kenbane Head' is a moving story dedicated to the memory of Mart McAughtry, a Merchant Seaman who died as a result of the sinking of the British vessel during the Battle of the Atlantic.
The author is Belfast-born Sam McAughtry, Mart’s brother. He tells the story both of the vessel’s sinking and of life for a family in Northern Ireland during the Second World War. There are moments of heartbreak interspersed with McAughtry’s wit lending a subtle amount of humour throughout. Many Ulstermen died when S.S. Kenbane head went down on 5th November 1940 and many more perished at sea throughout the Battle of the Atlantic and the rest of the Second World War.
