Overhead and Underfoot: Legacies of World War II around Lough Neagh is a two- day conference hosted by Lough Neagh Partnership with a bus tour of WW2 sites.

On 16th - 17th October 2018, Lough Neagh Partnership through its Heritage Lottery funded Lanscape Programme hosts Overhead and Underfoot: The Second World War Legacies around the Lough.

The venue is the historic Old Courthouse in Market Square, Antrim, Co. Antrim. The entire event is free to attend but advance booking is essential. There are 150 places available on day one and 50 on day two.

Day One

Day one of the conference looks at the cultural legacy of World War Two in the Lough Neagh area. A range of speakers will deliver talks and presentations on the stories associated with the locals and service personnel based around wartime Lough Neagh.

  • Richard Doherty (Military Historian and Author).
  • Alan Freeburn (NI War Memorial).
  • Aidan Fee (Stewartstown and District Local History Society).
  • Jonny McNee (Aviation Historian).
  • Ernie Cromie (Ulster Aviation Society).
  • John McCann (Historian and Author).
  • Rebecca Milligan (PhD Researcher QUB).
  • Dr. Jim O’Neil (Historian and Archaeologist).
  • Ian Henderson (Consultant in Tourism and Military Historian).
  • Jenny Hasslett (NI War Memorial).
  • Ian Montgomery (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland).

Day Two

Day two of the conference is a guided bus tour around Second World War heritage sites dotted around Lough Neagh. This will include airfields and a visit to the Ulster Aviation Society.
