Albert Rodden was a bus driver with the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board during World War Two. Born on 20th April 1913, he was the son of William G Rodden and Margaret Rodden (née Walker) of Limavady, Co. Londonderry.
He died in a tragic accident on 17th April 1942 aged 28 years old. His bus became involved in an accident with a US Army convoy on the road between Limavady and Derry/Londonderry.
A gun misfired causing fatal injuries to Rodden. A court martial found Sergeant William Venderbeck Clipsham of the US Army not guilty of manslaughter. The inquest returned a verdict of accidental death.
Albert left behind a wife Annie Rodden (née Cooke) and 3 children aged 11 years old, 9 years old, and 5 years old.
Albert Rodden’s grave is in Ballykelly Presbyterian Church, Ballykelly, Co. Londonderry. There is no headstone to mark his final resting place. Members of the US Army, Royal Air Force, Ulster Special Constabulary and Ulster Home Guard attended the funeral service. Also present were around 200 colleagues from the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board.
