Private Alfred Collins (5436506) served in 9th Battalion East Surrey Regiment during World War Two. Born in Middlesex, England, he was the foster-son of Mrs. EN Johnson of West Southbourne, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England.
He first enlisted in the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry before joining 9th Battalion East Surrey Regiment. 9th Battalion was a Home Defence unit based in Northern Ireland when Collins died on 4th January 1943. The battalion disbanded in June that year having been in Belfast, Co. Antrim since February 1941.
Alfred Collins’ grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section AS, Grave 5 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:
Thy will be done.
