Pilot Officer Alfred Mandale Fisher (103592) served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during World War Two. At his time of death, Fisher flew with RAF 615 Squadron from RAF Angle, Pembrokeshire, Wales.
Born in June 1915, he was the son of Alfred Fisher and Harriett Florence (Rita) Fisher (née Mateer) of 4 Cliftonville Avenue, Belfast, Co. Antrim. He was the youngest of 4 siblings, Pauline Fisher born in 1908, Shelagh Fisher born in 1910, and John Mateer Fisher born in 1911. Alfred Senior died on 18th March 1919 when young Alfred was only 3 years old.
Sports Cars
In 1933, aged 18 years old, Fisher had a brush with the law. Listed in documents as a stockbroker’s stepson from 61 Myrtlefield Park, Belfast, Co. Antrim, the teenager stood accused of the theft of high performance sports cars. A group of friends stole the motors including a Riley and an MG.
With his family background, and an expensive legal team, Fisher avoided a custodial sentence. Later the same year, he reoffended and this time received a month’s imprisonment. After this, the family sent the young man to South Africa for a period. He returned home after the death of his stepfather on 10th March 1935.
Fisher in the RAF
With the outbreak of World War Two, Alfred Mandale Fisher enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. The Gazette reports his enlistment date as 16th August 1941 when he joined RAF 615 Squadron in Surrey, England.
He died on 6th December 1941 aged 26 years old. On that date, his Hawker Hurricane IIB Z3499 scrambled from a new base at RAF Angle, Pembrokeshire, Wales. The plane failed to return in unknown circumstances.
Alfred Mandale Fisher has no known grave. His name is on Panel 32 of the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, England and also on a family memorial at Section F, Grave 430 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim.
