Oberfeldwebel or Platoon Sergeant Alfred Rinn served in the German Wehrmacht during World War Two. He fought with Landesschützenzug 23, an infantry defence regiment.
Born in Gießen in central Germany on 3rd July 1900, he was the son of August Ludwig Rinn and Elise Franziska Rinn. He was held as a prisoner of war in Northern Ireland and given the number B71040.
Rinn died aged 44 years old on 5th February 1945 only months before the war’s end. The cause of death was pulmonary tuberculosis. He underwent treatment at Campbell College Military Hospital, Belfast, Co. Antrim but ultimately succumbed to the illness.
Sergeant Alfred Rinn’s grave is in Block 4, Row 3, Grave 30 of Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery, Penkridge Bank, Staffordshire, England. He was first buried on 8th February 1945 in Glenalina Section AS, Grave 157, Belfast City Cemetery, Co. Antrim. On 26th February 1948, he was reinterred in Glenalina Section ES, Grave 205 before being repatriated on 17th July 1962.
