Able Seaman Arthur Davie served in the Royal Navy at HMS President III in Bristol at the time of his death on SS Lochgarry off the coast of Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim.

Able Seaman Arthur Davie (P/JX 291007) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Born on 22nd April 1921, he was the son of Alfred Davie and Charlotte A Davie of Leicester, Leicestershire.

He died of cold and exposure on 20th January 1942 aged 20 years old. At the time, he served at the shore base HMS President III. This was a shore base established on 28th August 1939 in Bristol to train men for Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships. At his time of death, he was a gunner on SS Lochgarry when it went down off the coast of Rathlin Island, Co. Antrim.

Arthur Davie’s grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section D, Grave 16 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:

He lost his life at duty’s call. In silence we remember.
