Sick Berth Attendant Charles Norman Given of Sydenham, Belfast, Co. Down served in the Royal Navy on board Hospital Ship Ophir in Singapore during the Second World War.

Sick Berth Attendant Charles Norman Given (D/MX93843) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Born on 25th June 1922, he was the son of Charles Norman Given and Hannah Jane Given (née McClements) of 83 Lisavon Street, Sydenham, Belfast, Co. Down.

He died in Singapore of septicaemia on 28th November 1945 aged 23 years old. He served on HS Ophir, a Dutch-built, Second World War hospital ship. The British Ministry of War requisitioned the ship for troop transport on 25th February 1942. It later became a hospital ship in Calcutta, India on 12th April 1942.

Charles Norman Given’s grave is in Section 35, Row C, Grave 7 of Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. His headstone bears the inscription:

Safe in the arms of Jesus, safe on His gentle breast.
