Gunner David Cromie (1458587) served in the Royal Artillery during World War Two. Born on 5th May 1907, he was the son of Samuel Cromie and Emily Sophia Cromie (née Bell) of 16 Woodvale Pass, Belfast, Co. Antrim.
Samuel and Emily had eight children; William James Cromie born on 31st July 1898, Sarah Jane Cromie born on 12th July 1899, Anna Elizabeth Cromie born on 15th August 1900, Samuel David Cromie born on 10th August 1902, Samuel Cromie born on 27th February 1904, David Cromie born on 5th May 1907, Robert Henry Cromie born on 8th May 1910, Frederick Cromie born on 22nd July 1913. Sarah Jane and Samuel David both died in infancy.
David Cromie married Elizabeth Eileen Dixon on 26th April 1933 in Belfast, Co. Antrim. He was honorary treasurer of the Belfast branch of the Royal Artillery Association,
Gunner Cromie died in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, Co. Antrim on 1st January 1946 aged 39 years old. The funeral took place at 1400hrs on 3rd January 1946 from Cromie’s home at 18 Dhu Varren Parade, Belfast, Co. Antrim.
David Cromie’s grave is in Glenaline Extension, Section Y, Grave 363 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:
They will, O Lord, not mine, be done.
