Leading Seaman David Herron (JX 183513) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. Born on 22nd April 1910, he was the son of Joseph John Herron and Janey Herron (née Marshall) of 36 Foxglove Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim. Joseph had served in 1st Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers during World War One.
The 1911 Irish census shows David as a 1-year-old living with both parents at 19 Quinton Street, Belfast, Co. Antrim. Soon after the census, the couple had another son, William Herron, born on 27th May 1911.
In 1939, David lived at 20 Church Street, Workington, Cumberland where he had found work as a contractor’s labourer. He enlisted in the Royal Navy on 28th February 1940, serving throughout the rest of the Second World War, leaving on 19th November 1945. After World War Two, he joined the Merchant Navy, continuing life at sea.
David Herron died on 24th January 1985 aged 74 years old. His grave is in Distington Crematorium, Workington, Cumbria.
