Corporal Desmond Mary Grant from Toomebridge, Co. Antrim served in the Royal Air Force during World War Two. He was taken prisoner of war in Crete in 1941.

Corporal Desmond Mary Grant (539570) served in the Royal Air Force during World War Two. He was the son of James Grant and Ellen Josephine Grant of Toomebridge, Co. Antrim.

He died on 20th September 1941 aged 23 years old. Grant had been a prisoner on Crete since 24th May 1941. After Grant’s death, German authorities buried him in the German Military Cemetery at Doberitz, Berlin. This cemetery had an area set aside for prisoners of war who died in captivity. In 1948, he was reinterred in the Commonwealth Military Cemetery.

Corporal Desmond Mary Grant’s grave is in Section 4, Row A, Plot 21 of the 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Charlottenburg, Berlin, Germany. His headstone bears the inscription:

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on him. Loving father, sisters, and brothers.
