Gerald McFaull

Coleraine-born Gerald McFaull served in 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers in Egypt before the outbreak of World War Two where he tragically died in 1938.

A tragic accident on a railway line in Egypt, North Africa claimed the life of Fusilier Gerald McFaul on 18th November 1938, almost a year before the outbreak of the Second World War.

Fusilier Gerald McFaull (6979083) served in 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers before the outbreak of World War Two. The 2nd Battalion was newly formed in 1938, serving in Malta and Egypt.

Known to family and friends as Gerry, he was born in 1919 in Coleraine, Co. Londonderry. Gerry died on 18th November 1938 aged 19 years old in a tragic accident in Egypt, North Africa.

On a packed train full of troops returning home on leave, Fusilier McFaull heard the train’s whistle blow. Believing the vehicle to have come to a stop, he stepped through the doors of the still moving train and fell to his death.

Gerald McFaull’s grave is in Section M7, Row E, Grave 4 of Moascar War Cemetery, Ismailia, Egypt. Although the cemetery is run by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Gerry’s name is not on their database as he died before the outbreak of war. His grave has a Commonwealth War Graves Commission headstone.
