Hugh Brown served in 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles during World War Two. He took part in the Normandy invasion of 1944, landing on Sword Beach on D-Day 6th June 1944.
A Corporal H Brown (7043347) received a commendation for good service during the Normandy campaign. It is unsure if this is the same H Brown.
On the approach to Troarn, Normandy, ‘C’ Company of 2nd Battalion Royal Ulster Rifles advanced towards the church. Under fierce resistance, Corporal Brown and his men came under fire from two directions.
Leading the company, pressing forward with bayonets and hand grenades, Brown’s men killed seven enemy troops. They took thirteen others prisoner on the way. Only a serious injury to Platoon Commander Lieutenant Rand halted their advance.
