Fusilier James Alexander Carmichael first served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers before transferring to the Special Boat Squadron attached to the SAS.

Fusilier James Alexander Carmichael (6980528) served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during World War Two. Known as Jim, he was the son of Arthur Carmichael and Annie Carmichael of Omagh, Co. Tyrone.

He died on 11th October 1944 aged 24 years old. Records suggest his death occurred during an unsuccessful attempt to blow up a main road bridge north of Athens. At the time, he was in M Detachment, No. 1 Special Boat Squadron attached to the Special Air Service (SAS), Army Air Corps. His grave was first at Megara Civil Cemetery until reburial took place on 12th February 1945.

James Alexander Carmichael’s grave is in Section 17, Row E, Grave 15 of Phaleron War Cemetery, Greece. His headstone bears the inscription:

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember him. Our son.
