James Hunter

Captain James Hunter served in the Royal Navy during The Great War. He was a Board of Trade Surveyor in Hong Kong when he died on 12th December 1941.

Captain James Hunter of Glenarm, Co. Antrim was a veteran mariner who had served in The Great War rising through the ranks of the Royal Navy.

Captain James Hunter was a Board of Trade Surveyor during World War Two. Born on 5th June 1892, he was the third son of the late Thomas Hunter and Annie Hunter of Toberwine Street, Glenarm, Co. Antrim, and the husband of Dr. Louise Olivia Hunter of Leighton Hill, Hong Kong.

After attending Ballymena Academy, Ballymena, Co. Antrim, James became a seaman before the outbreak of World War One. The 1911 Census of England and Wales lists James as an apprentice on board the vessel Star of Scotland. In August 1915 he joined the Royal Naval Reserve. He died in Hong Kong on 12th December 1941 aged 49 years old.

James Hunter’s name is on the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour in St. George’s Chapel, Westminster Abbey, London.
