Sergeant James Thomas Hawthorne (973032) served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during World War Two. He was the youngest son of the late James Thomas Hawthorne and Mary Hawthorne of "The Limes", 27 Westway Drive, Belfast, Co. Antrim.
James worked for the Ulster Bank in Donegal, Ireland before the outbreak of the Second World War. He died on 1st February 1941 aged 27 years old when Handley-Page Hampden P1328 came down near Fillingham Lane, Willingham, Lincolnshire. Hawthorne was a Wireless Operator with RAF 144 Squadron when the Mark I bomber crashed at 2015hrs in a snow storm. Sergeant John Ford Thurlbeck (754791), the Pilot, also died as a result of the incident.
James Thomas Hawthorne’s grave is in Section E6, Grave 226 of Dundonald Cemetery, Dundonald, Co. Down.
