Gunner John Edward Newell (1064497) served in 169th Battery, 57th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery during World War Two. He was the husband of Esther Newell of Belfast, Co. Antrim.

169th Battery saw action in the Middle East and during heavy fighting in the Western Desert Campaign. Armed with Bofors Guns, the unit took on the Luftwaffe during Operation Crusader.

John Edward Newell died on 3rd February 1942 aged 37 years old. His grave is in Section 3, Row B, Grave 17 of Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya. His headstone bears the inscription:

Far from his native land, he sleeps always mourned by his wife and children.
