Ordinary Seaman Joseph Gerard McGarry served in the Merchant Navy during World War Two. He was the son of Alexander McGarry and Agnes McGarry, and nephew of Isabella McKeaveney of Belfast, Co. Antrim.

Ordinary Seaman Joseph Gerard McGarry served in the Merchant Navy during World War Two. He was the son of Alexander McGarry and Agnes McGarry, and nephew of Isabella McKeaveney of Belfast, Co. Antrim.

He died on 27th November 1940 aged 20 years old. He was on MV Glenmoor, a straggler from Convoy OB-248 when it came under attack from U-103. The Nazi submarine torpedoed the London registered vessel at 1956hrs around 167 miles north-west of Sylne Head.

Master Jack Young and 30 others including McGarry died as a result of the U-Boat attack. HMS Harvester and HMS Havelock picked up on 2 survivors, landing at Liverpool, Lancashire.

Joseph Gerard McGarry has no known grave. His name is on Panel 52 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London.
