He was the son of Matthew McAllister Sr. of Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim. The Corporal had married an Edna M Lister in Leeds, England. He had sent his family in Carrickfergus a postcard at the time and that was their last contact.

Corporal McAllister died in October 1942 during the second Battle of El Alamein in Egypt, North Africa. His name features on the memorial of Joymount Presbyterian Church, Carrickfergus, Co. Antrim.
