Rifleman Peter John Treanor (2721340) served in 2nd Battalion The London Irish Rifles, Royal Ulster Rifles during World War Two. He was the son of Owen Treanor and Rose Treanor of Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh.
He died on 4th December 1943 aged 33 years old. His death came as the Irish Brigade pressed forward through Italy from Termoli to the Moro River between 5th October 1943 and 5th December 1943. 2nd Battalion London Irish Rifles captured Fossacesia on 1st December 1943 and helped to break the German Winter Line. They reached the Moro River on 4th December 1943. The Battalion War Diary suggests there was no heavy fighting that day although there was shelling.
Peter John Treanor’s grave is in Section VIII, Row C, Grave 27 of Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy. His headstone bears the inscription:
Born Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh, Ireland. Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on him. RIP.
