Stoker 1st Class Stewart Potts (D/SKX942) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. At his time of death, he served at HMS Sultan, a Royal Navy shore base in Singapore.
Born on 19th March 1920, he was the son of Stewart Potts and Annie Potts (née Pue) of Moneydorragh, Kilkeel, Co. Down. The family later moved to Lisburn, Co. Antrim. Stewart had 4 siblings; Arthur Potts born on 18th March 1923 and Selina Elizabeth Potts born on 19th January 1927. A younger brother James Potts born on 4th April 1934 died aged 3 years old. When Stewart was 20 years old, his youngest brother Samuel Alexander Potts was born on 26th May 1940.
Stewart Potts married Joan Elizabeth Hilda Crane and the couple had a son David Michael Crane on 12th November 1939 in Okehampton, Devon.
The Stoker 1st Class died on 14th February 1942 aged 21 years old. HMS Sultan was a Royal Navy shore base next to the docks on Singapore. When Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942, many men died or became prisoners of war.
Stewart Potts has no known grave. His name is on Panel 70, Column 2 of the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Plymouth, Devon. His brother Arthur Potts served in the Irish Guards and died on 11th August 1944.
