Flight Lieutenant William John McCarroll (103019) served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during World War Two.
Born in 1918, he was the son of William McCarroll and Minnie McCarroll of Belfast, Co. Antrim. He attended Ballymena Academy grammar school in Ballymena, Co. Antrim.
In early 1943, William married Gwendoline Mary Sheridan from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. Records suggest Mary was pregnant in 1943 and gave birth to a son also named William after her husband’s death.
He died on active service on Sunday 21st November 1943 aged 25 years old while flying off the Italian coast. Flight Lieutenant William John McCarroll has no known grave. His name features on Panel 120 of the Runnymede Memorial, Surrey, United Kingdom.
