Chief Petty Officer William Mahood was an experienced seaman from Belfast, Co. Antrim. He first went to sea at 17 years old and served during the First World War.

Chief Petty Officer William Mahood (D/214442) served in the Royal Navy during World War Two. He was the son of Robert Mahood and Mary Mahood of Belfast, Co. Antrim, and husband of Mary Alice Mahood of Belfast, Co. Antrim.

William had many years’ experience at sea. His service record lists his first ship as Black Prince on 17th April 1901. He served during World War One and his last ship was Columbine in March 1919. He died on 3rd September 1944 aged 60 years old. At the time, he served at HMS Raleigh, a shore base used for training young naval recruits at Torpoint, Plymouth.

William Mahood’s grave is in Glenalina Extension, Section Q, Grave 42 of Belfast City Cemetery, Belfast, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:
