10th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, United States Army arrived in Northern Ireland in 1943. On 16th October 1943, they established a regimental base at Killymoon Castle, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone where they remained briefly.
By late October 1943, 10th Infantry Regiment was scattered across coastal Co. Down. They had bases at Ballyedmund Castle, Rostrevor, Co. Down as well as in the towns of Kilkeel, Co. Down, and Newcastle, Co. Down. During their time in Ulster, Regimental inspections took place under several high profile visitors including General George S. Patton.
On 17th May 1944, Supreme Commander General Dwight D. Eisenhower touched down at Greencastle Airfield, Kilkeel, Co. Down. There, Eisenhower met with General Stafford LeRoy Irwin and inspected troops of 10th Infantry Regiment and Divisional Artillery. This was a very impressive ceremony. It would be difficult to see a more uniformly well-turned out and fit looking body of men.
10th Infantry Regiment remained in Northern Ireland until 6th or 7th July 1944 when they departed from Belfast for Normandy a month after the D-Day Landings of 6th June 1944.
