Headquarters 34th Infantry Division of the United States Army made use of Brookvale House, Ballymena, Co. Antrim in 1942 and 1943.
This unit of the famous Red Bull Division. The two-storey house would have housed officers. Photos from the time show sentry boxes by the entrance gates and sandbag protection. A memorial garden stood opposite the house and the town war memorial remains there to this day.
In November 1948, the Ministry of Finance responded to criticism from the people of Ballymena, Co. Antrim regarding the state of the Brookvale site. They stated the Government had purchased the site with a view to demolition and the building of a new structure. Therefore, cleaning up the site was viewed as a waste of money. They conceded to investigate ways of making a small effort to quiet the complaints.
By 1951, Brookvale House was Headquarters of the Ulster Special Constabulary in Ballymena, Co. Antrim. The old house has long since gone, replaced by a modern building operation as a Police Service of Northern Ireland station.
