The village of Tynan, Co. Armagh hosted soldiers of the United States Army and the Belgian Infantry during the Second World War. The grounds of the impressive Tynan Abbey, which once stood near the village became a large military camp.

A smaller camp stood on the Chapel Hill Road in the village. Residents in this rural location would have become accustomed to tanks, jeep, and military trucks rolling through the countryside.
