From 22nd October 1943, Bannvale House, Gilford, Co. Down served as a base for elements of 2nd Squadron, 6th Cavalry, United States Army.
As well as training, troops used Bannvale House to host parties and dances that both soldiers and local residents attended. One high profile visitor to the camp was General George S Patton.
