Holywood War Memorial stands in Redburn Square in the Co. Down town facing the railway station. Sir James Craig first put forth the proposal for a monument. The statue by Mr. Leonard Stanford Merrifield of Chelsea, a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors from London, England features a 6' tall bronze soldier in full kit standing in the "on guard" position.
Mrs. Dunlop of St. Helen’s unveiled the memorial. She was the widow of the local G.P. whose eldest son was one of the first soldiers from Holywood, Co. Down to die during The Great War. At the time, Redburn Square was still under development.
Work completed on the memorial on Saturday 28th January 1922 in what was then known as Railway Square. Several months later, before the dedication of the war memorial, the open space surrounding the monument was laid out. Holywood Council chose the name Redburn Square to honour Second Lieutenant John Spencer Dunville V.C. He was the second son of John Dunville and Violet Dunville of Redburn House, Holywood, Co. Down.
Iron railings surrounded the memorial and white quartz stones covered the area surrounding the statue. It stands on top of a 9’6″ base of Portland stone. The memorial bears the inscription:
In grateful memory of the men of Holywood and District who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918. Their name liveth for evermore.
There are 28 names on the Holywood War Memorial relating to the Second World War.
