In days gone by, coastal destinations such as Millisle Beach, Millisle, Co. Down offered the people of Northern Ireland a popular place to enjoy a day trip, to swim, or take a picnic by the sea.
During World War Two, some beaches became out of bounds areas but the coast at Millisle still attracted young people from the area. Jewish refugee children, part of the Kindertransport program played on The Knowes on Millisle Beach, Millisle, Co. Down. These large sand dunes no longer exist although many people still enjoy the scenic and peaceful beach.
