Master Andrew William McCallion served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. Born on 10th November 1893, he was the son of James Alexander McCallion and Mary McCallion (née Wright) of Islandmagee, Co. Antrim.
On 11th April 1916, Andrew married Elizabeth McCleery Smyth of Whitehead, Co. Antrim. The ceremony took place at First Presbyterian Church, Islandmagee, Co. Antrim. The couple had a son Thomas Smyth McCallion born in 1918, and a daughter Andrewetta Williamena “Mena” McCallion born in 1922. The family lived at 35 Adelaide Avenue, Whitehead, Co. Antrim.
Andrew William McCallion died on 21st January 1940 aged 46 years old. At the time, he was Master of S.S. Oranmore. His grave is in St. John’s Churchyard, Islandmagee, Co. Antrim. His headstone bears the inscription:
To live in the hearts of those we love is not to die. Wife, son, and daughter.
