Staff Sergeant Carmine S. D'Aniello served in the United States Army during the Second World War. Born on 10th August 1918, he was the son of Frank D'Aniello and Lucia D'Aniello (née Lubarno) of Brooklyn, New York, United States of America.
He was with A Company, 10th Infantry Regiment, 5th (Red Diamond) Infantry Division, United States Army when they shipped out to Northern Ireland in 1943. 10th Infantry Regiment arrived in Ulster and set up a base at Killymoon Castle from 16th October 1943. From later that month, most of 10th Infantry Regiment was in Newcastle, Co. Down. Parts of the Regiment were nearby at Ballyedmond Castle, Rostrevor, Co. Down, and in the coastal town of Kilkeel, Co. Down.
D’Aniello later served in the Normandy Campaign that followed D-Day. Military records show his service dates from 26th January 1942 to 23rd May 1945. After returning from the Second World War, Carmine settled in New Haven, Connecticut, United States of America. There, on 5th April 1947, he married Rosalia Giliberto.
Carmine S. D’Aniello died on 4th June 1994 in Louisville, Kentucky, United States of America. His grave is in Lebanon National Cemetery, Lebanon, Kentucky, United States of America.
On 30th June 2020, his son Rich D’Aniello of Louisville, Kentucky, USA accepted military medals on behalf of his late father. Brigadier General Robert Bennett presented the awards to the D’Aniello family. The medals included the Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and 2 Purple Hearts.
When Camine died, he left a DD214 discharge form and an unknown legacy of service for his family to piece together. This information including deployments, promotions, and achievements was also completed by Brigadier General Bennett.
