Sergeant Edward Lewandowski served in the Polish Air Force. He was a member of No. 6 Anti Aircraft Co-operation Unit operating from Sydenham Airfield, Belfast. Lewandowski was born in Grodék Jagielloński in the northeast of Poland. Grodék is now part of Ukraine.
On 30th April 1942, Edward Lewandowski took off in Westland Lysander P1731 from Sydenham Airfield, Belfast. Barrage balloons protected the airfield on the edge of Belfast Lough. Lewandowski’s plane struck the cable of one of the balloons. After the impact, it spun out of control and into the ground near the airfield.

Edward Lewandowski’s grave is in the War Graves Group Section A, Row LG, Grave 39 of Milltown Cemetery, Belfast. He lies next to fellow Polish airman Jozef Antoni Pudelko. Both part of the same unit, the two men died only a week apart.
