On 18th October 1943, Avro Anson N3572 came down at Glensesk, Ballycastle, Co. Antrim. The two crew members killed were a high-ranking Polish Wing Commander and Australian Eric George Clarke.

Warrant Officer Eric George Clarke (404206) served in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War Two. He was the son of Eric William Clarke and Olive Marion Clarke. He was the husband of Vivian Myrtle Clarke of Banyo, Queensland, Australia.

Clarke died on board the Mark I Avro Anson N5372 on 18th October 1943 aged 26 years old. At the time, N5372 flew with No. 17 Group of the Royal Air Force. He was a wireless operator/air-gunner.

Polish Wing Commander WR Heiler, 1st Navigator Pupil also died in the crash. Flight Lieutenant JK Dunn, 2nd Navigator Pupil and Pilot Flying Officer JG Cooper survived with injuries.

Eric George Clarke’s grave is in Grave 27 of Drumachose Church of Ireland, Limavady, Co. Londonderry. His headstone bears the inscription:

His duty nobly done.
