Sergeant George Alexander Martin (1006035) served in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve during the Second World War. Born on 21st April 1918, he was the son of Frederick George Martin and Hubertha Alice Marie Martin (née Jansen) of 20 Blackwood Street, Belfast.
George died at Nottingham City Hospital on 28th April 1945 aged 27 years old as a result of injuries sustained on 15th April 1945. His last known home address was 53 Candahar Street, Belfast.
He was the Pilot of Avro Lancaster PB213 with RAF No. 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit. The crew took off at 2020hrs on 14th April 1945 from RAF Winthorpe, Nottinghamshire on a night navigation training exercise.
The Mark III bomber came down at 0025hrs on 15th April 1945 at Oxton Hill, Nottinghamshire. The crash site was close to Hall Farm on the main Oxton to Southwell road. A board of enquiry learned the crew had been on an exercise of similar difficulty immediately before this one. Findings suggested that fatigue may have played a part in the incident.
