Private George Alexander Workman was born in Coleraine, Co. Londonderry and emigrated to live in Australia and New Zealand in the years before the Second World War.

Private George Alexander Workman (289594) served in 25th Battalion New Zealand Infantry during the Second World War. Born on 11th September 1905, he was the son of William George Workman and Martha Workman (née McDowell) of Coleraine, Co. Londonderry.

George’s baptism took place on 11th June 1908 at Killaig Presbyterian Church, Aghadowey, Co. Londonderry. On 9th October 1924, he departed London on Euripides bound for Sydney, Australia. He arrived back in London on Ballarat on 4th December 1933, departing again for New Zealand on SS Rangitiki on 17th September 1936. He arrived in Wellington, New Zealand on 21st October 1936 but sailed on to Sydney, Australia on SS Wanganella arriving 5 days later. He lived in Wentworth, New South Wales, Australia in 1937 but returned to Thames, Waikato, New Zealand by 1938.

With the outbreak of the Second World War, George Alexander Workman enlisted in the New Zealand Infantry. He died on 14th July 1944 aged 38 years old during the Italian Campaign. His grave is in Section III, Row A, Grave 3 of Arezzo War Cemetery, Italy.
