George Moore died on 21st June 1944 while serving with the Merchant Navy. He is remembered on the Thompson family grave in Carnmoney Cemetery, Newtownabbey, Co. Antrim.

Seaman George Moore served with the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the only son of Sarah Moore of 38 Greenmount Street. His father John Moore lived in London.

George Moore died on 21st June 1944 aged 16 years old. Before the Second World War, he attended Belfast Model School. His death was tragic for many reasons. He is one of the youngest casualties from Northern Ireland to die in wartime.

In November 1944, Gerald Anthony Cole of Riverside Avenue, Chorlton-cum-Hardy appeared in court in Manchester accused of Moore’s murder. The court heard the 21-year-old strangled the ship’s boy before pushing him out through a porthole.

His grave is in Dely Ibrahim War Cemetery, Algeria. His name is on the Thompson family plot in Carnmoney Cemetery, Newtownabbey, Co. Antrim where an inscription reads:

George T Moore, MN who died 21st June 1944 aged 16 years. Interred in Blyibrahim British Military Cemetery, Algiers, North Africa.
