Third Officer Harold Lindley Roberts served in the Merchant Navy during the Second World War. He was the son of Lindley herbert Roberts and Ellen Roberts of Dundrum, Co. Down.
He died on 31st July 1940 aged 35 years old on S.S. Domingo de Larrinaga. On 16th July 1940, the Steamship was en route from Bahía Blanca, Argentina to Belfast with a cargo of grain. It was not part of a convoy and came under attack from the German Raider Pinguin around 300 miles south-west of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
A total of 8 members of the crew died in the attack with around 30 survivors picked up by the German Raider. The date of death of most victims of the attack is given by Commonwealth War Graves Commission as 31st July 1940.
Harold Lindley Roberts has no known grave. His name is on Panel 36 of the Tower Hill Memorial, London, England.
