Civilian Henry Spence died on 7th May 1941 aged 52 years old. He was the son of the late William Spence and Mary Duff Spence of Drumatee Farm, Markethill, Co Armagh, and the husband of Catherine McKay Kerr Spence.
His death occurred at 6 Ingleston Street, Greenock, Renfrewshire. That night, 7th May 1941, was the second night of the Greenock Blitz. Ingleston Street bore the brunt of Luftwaffe bombs with incendiary bombs causing a large fire at the distillery on the street. This acted as a beacon for following bombers.
Henry Spence’s name is on the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour at St. George’s Chapel, Westminster Abbey, London. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records 31 deaths at 6 Ingleston Street on 7th May 1941.
