Henryk Komenda was a 22-year-old pilot in the Polish Air Force when he died as Boulton Paul Defiant N3402 crashed near Ballycarry, Co. Antrim.

Lieutenant Henryk Komenda (P/792224) served in the Polish Air Force during the Second World War. He was born on 13th January 1920 in Sielec, Busko, Poland.

Henryk died on 9th July 1942 aged 22 years old. He was the Pilot of Boulton Paul Defiant N3402 that took off from Newtownards Airfield, Co. Down. At the time, the Polish Airman was flying with RAF 256 Squadron.

The squadron had a small flight of Defiant night fighters based at the Co. Down airfield. No. 1480 (Anti-Aircraft Co-Operation) Flight had moved there in December 1941. Komenda’s Defiant came down at Ballycarry, Co. Antrim killing the Polish Pilot and Air Gunner Peter Charles Hunter Phillips.

Henryk Komenda’s grave is in the Roman Catholic Plot, Section 18, Grave 23 of Movilla Cemetery, Newtownards, Co. Down.
