Private James Vincent Bellomo (13088750) served in the United States Army during the Second World War. Born on 2nd June 1923, he was the son of Salvatore "Sam" Bellomo and Giovina "Jennie" Helen Bellomo (née Andolfi) of Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Sam and Jennie arrived in the United States of America in 1913 and 1921 respectively.
On 30th June 1942, Bellomo enlisted in the United States Army at Erie, Pennsylvania aged 19 years old. His papers describe him having a dark complexion, brown hair, brown eyes, 5’9″ tall, and weighing 150lbs. At the time, he lived at 145 Sharpsville Avenue, Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and worked for the Mercer Tube Co.
Documents suggest Private Bellomo served at New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania between 5th September 1942 and 12th October 1943. From 13th October 1943 to 7th November 1945, he was engaged in foreign service. He demobbed at Fort Indiantown Gap, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania on 12th November 1945.
A County Armagh Wedding
During his time in Northern Ireland, James met and married Sarah Jane Atkinson of 7 Century Street, Portadown, Co. Armagh. Sarah Jane, sometimes known as Sally and sometimes as Sandra was born on 20th February 1926. Her older sister Margretta Atkinson married a Royal Air Force Officer around the same time as Sarah Jane married Private Bellomo.
On Saturday 18th August 1945, Sally was crowned Victory Queen at a Garden Fete in Portadown, Co. Armagh to celebrate Victory Over Japan Day or V.J. Day. Following the Second World War, Sarah Jane Bellomo travelled to the United States of America to set up home with her new husband. She arrived in New York, New York on 21st April 1946 aged 20 years old on S.S. Queen Mary.
James Vincent Bellomo died in Cleveland, Ohio on 26th April 1991 aged 67 years old. At his time of death, he worked as a Mail Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. Sarah Jane Bellomo of 590 Thornton Street, Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania died on 26th November 1997. Both graves are in America’s Cemetery, Hermitage, Mercer County, Pennsylvania.
